2013 NJCAA National Championship - Day 5

May 17, 2013 at Plano, TX
The last day of the NJCAA Men's National Tournament featured the finals of the main and consolation draws. The Lewis & Clark Trailblazers had Cameron Randall and Neil Berkel in the #1 Singles and #2 Singles consolation finals respectively.

Randall came out and started making his opponent - Jack Busby from Cowley - hit a lot of shots. It turned out that his opponent was hitting hard but having a difficult time keeping the ball in the court. At 2-2 Randall reeled off 4 games in a row including some really aggressive points to finish out the first set. In the second set, Busby began taking the pace out of his shots and the game with an apparent injury. Randall tried to be aggressive with the weaker shots, but Busby hit many good passing shots and turned the tables. Randall lost the second set 6-0 and the final set tiebreak 10-2.

Berkel played the #2 seed from Laredo. His opponent had a big forehand that he would miss occasionally, but he wasn't too generous to Berkel, defeating him 6-1, 6-0.

The Lewis & Clark Trailblazers finished with 18 points and tied with Temple for 12th place out of 26 teams. This accomplished the team goal of placing in the top half of the National Tournament and was a validation of the hard work the team put in through the entire 2012/2013 school year. In 2012 the team scored 8 putting LCCC at 20th out of 26 schools. In 2011 the team scored 5 points and in 2010 scored 4.5 points.

2013 NJCAA National Championship - Day 4

May 16, 2013 at Plano, TX
Day 4 of the National Tournament was scheduled to start with #1 and #2 singles consolation draw matches for the Trailblazers. However, the opposing team had already left Plano, so Cameron Randall and Neil Berkel received walkover wins to advance to the consolation finals on Friday.

At #1 Doubles consolation, Randall/Logan finished their match with Paradise Valley with a win. Paradise Valley was hitting the ball better than the previous day, but steady pressure to their weaker backhands and strong crosscourt returns were all that was needed to beat them 6-2, 6-1. Advancing to the semi-final round, Randall/Logan next faced the #2 seed Tyler Team who had been upset in the opening round. The Tyler team played big and loose and never gave Randall/Logan an opportunity to get into the match. Randall/Logan were defeated 6-0, 6-1.

2013 NJCAA National Championship - Day 3

May 15, 2013 at Plano, TX
Day 3 of the NJCAA Men's National Tournament was rained out in the afternoon, but not before the Trailblazers were able to score two more wins. At #1 Singles consolation Cameron Randall defeated the #1 player from Harford 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2). At #2 Singles consolation Neil Berkel defeated the #2 player from Harford 6-2, 7-5. In the main draw third round Patrick Logan faced the #3 player from Seminole. Logan executed the game plan of forcing his opponent to his backhand side perfectly, but his opponent hit too many good shots defeating Logan 6-0, 6-0. Quinton Argent provided the most excitement for the Trailblazers is his #4 Singles third round match against the #2 seed from ABAC. Argent's opponent played a big game but Argent used his speed to track down a lot of balls to keep the match close in the first set. At 5-4, Argent served four huge serves to win the first set. In the second set, his opponent made an adjustment to get more balls in play and that turned out to be the difference. Argent continued to win a few games with his big serve, but fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

2013 NJCAA National Championship - Day 2

May 14, 2013 at Plano, TX
There were more firsts for the Lewis & Clark Men's Tennis Team at the second day of the NJCAA National Tournament with two main draw second round singles wins by Patrick Logan at #3 singles and Quinton Argent at #4 singles. Logan defeated a player from Temple in the nervy second round match where both players were seeking to find consistency but still capitalize on opportunities to be aggressive. To win the first set 6-3, Logan did the better job of keeping his groundstrokes in play but couldn't force many net points as his opponent seemed to like a target at net. In the second set, Logan kept the pressure on with consistency followed up with more trips forward including some very timely serving and volleying to close it out 6-1. Argent defeated another player from Temple - a lefty with a good forehand and a decent net game. Argent used his big serve effectively to force errors and found the range with his topspin forehand to prolong points and run his opponent all over the court. Argent won 6-2, 6-1.

In other main draw matches, Milos Vukicevic lost 6-0, 6-0 to ASA (3 seed) at #5 singles, Tyler Kerley lost 6-0, 6-1 to Tyler (2 seed) at #6 singles, Argent/Vukicevic lost 6-0, 6-4 to Seward at #2 doubles, and Berkel/Kerley lost 6-2, 6-1 to Collin (2 seed) at #3 doubles.

Cameron Randall scored the third win of the day in the consolation bracket by defeating Mississippi Gulf Coast at #1 singles. In blustery conditions, both Randall and his opponent fought to find each other's backhand side and come to net. Randall's steady backhand was the difference as he was able to maintain better court position whereas his opponent ran around to hit his forehand. After holding on to a service break to win the first set 6-3, Randall faced a more desperate opponent who stopped making as many errors. At 5-all Randall fought off a couple break points with great serving and clutch play. In the next game, with his opponent crashing the net to avoid his own nervous groundstrokes, Randall hit three brilliant passing shots to earn the win 7-5.

For Day 3 of the tournament, Lewis & Clark will have Logan and Argent competing in the third round of the main draw singles and Randall, Berkel, and Randall/Logan continuing in the consolation bracket.

2013 NJCAA National Championship - Day 1

May 13, 2013 at Plano, TX
The 2013 NJCAA Mens Division I National Tennis Tournament features 26 teams from across the country including the Lewis & Clark Trailblazers. The first day was the most successful the team has had in the past four years of attending the tournament, including six first round wins out of nine flights.

At #1 Singles, Cameron Randall (Edwardsville) played Scottsdale and exchanged early breaks with his swift opponent. Randall used his superior backhand to force some errors but clutch passing shots from his opponent were the difference as he fell in two sets 6-4, 6-3.

At #2 Singles, Neil Berkel (Troy) played a lefty from Mississippi Gulf Coast with a big serve and forehand. Berkel used his acrobatic and tenacious style of play to keep points going and find his opponent's backhand, but in the end, his opponent hit too many big shots defeating Berkel 6-3, 6-2.

At #3 Singles, Patrick Logan (Alton) dominated his opponent from Prairie State getting to the net off of his serve and slice approach shots. Logan's superb volleys ended most points as he won 6-1, 6-1.

At #4 Singles, Quinton Argent (Ravenshope, Austrailia) used his big serve to overpower the player from Paradise Valley. Quinton also hit sharply angled forehands with heavy topspin to move his opponent, draw errors and earn a 6-3, 6-1 win.

At #5 Singles, Milos Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) played Prairie State. Using his quickness and good defense, Vukicevic outsteadied his opponent and won easily 6-2, 6-1.

At #6 Singles, Tyler Kerley (Benton) played Paradise Valley. Kerley determined early on that coming to the net was the correct strategy and used that tactic to win 6-1, 6-2.

At #1 Doubles, the team of Randall/Logan played the team from Seward. After falling behind 6-0, 5-0, Randall and Logan started adjusting to the high pace of their opponents shots and mounted a furious comeback by rocketing serves and returns of their own and attacking the net. They managed to win four games in a row but couldn't quite win a fifth falling 6-0, 6-4.

At #2 Doubles, Argent/Vukicevic played Elgin. Both of their opponents had strong forehands and quick hands at the net. Argent's serves and returns and Vukicevic's aggressive net play applied steady pressure to their opponents which resulted in an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win.

At #3 Doubles, Berkel/Kerley played a tough Itawamba team. Berkel and Kerley played fantastic doubles from start to finish with steady strong returns and smothering net play. They committed very few unforced errors and maintained their high level of play to win 6-4, 6-1.

The six wins gives Lewis & Clark 12 points which is higher than the previous record of 8 total points scored in any of the last three years. All nine flights of the team can continue to score points tomorrow in the second round of the main draw and the first round of the consolation draw.

2013 Match #15 vs. Lindenwood Belleville

Apr 12, 2013 4:00pm - 7:30pm at Lewis & Clark
LCCC 7, Lindenwood Belleville 2

The Lewis & Clark Men's Tennis team improved to 7-8 on the season with a 7-2 win over Lindenwood Belleville on Friday April 12 at the Andy Simpson Tennis Complex. This win avenged an earlier loss to Lindenwood where the men dropped 5 of 6 singles lines but won all 3 doubles. Similarly, on Friday, Lewis & Clark started by winning all three doubles lines in convincing fashion. After giving away early breaks of serve in each contest, every doubles team rebounded to build and maintain the lead. Randall and Logan made some very key shots including an impressive overhead by Logan on break point to hold Logan's serve at 4-2. Vukicevic's hard work on his serve technique paid off as he dropped only one point through all of his service games.

In singles, Randall nearly put away his opponent in two sets, and played confidently in the third set tiebreaker to win it 14-12. Berkel dominated Prosser early, but couldn't finish him at love in the second set. Prosser stopped making any errors, but on the fifth try, Berkel found a way to win a game and close out the win. Logan started with a few forehand errors, but quickly found a good mix of topspin and slice groundstrokes to frustrate his opponent and draw errors. Logan finished the match with dominant net play - finding some impressive angles on his serves. Argent used his athleticism to wear out his opponent from the baseline with a good mix of defensive and offensive groundstrokes. Argent's serve and backhand were especially impressive. Vukicevic's opponent was hitting huge forehands the entire match. Vukicevic lost the first set but used good defense and some big forehands of his own to win the second. In the tiebreak, a few excellent shots from his opponent was the difference as he fell 10-6. Kerley started strong winning the first set, but couldn't find an answer when his opponent started hitting moonball shots. In the third set tiebreak a few key misses resulted in a 10-7 loss.

The Trailblazers are now 7-8 on the season with three more matches remaining. The team will be focused on preparing for the Region 24 Tournament with Kaskaskia and finishing with a winning record.

2012 NJCAA National Championship - Day 4

May 17, 2012 at Plano, TX
Thursday was the last day of tennis for the Blazers in the 2012 NJCAA Men's Tennis National Tournament. Alex Prusaczyk played Ducky Troutman from Meridian in the #5 Singles Consolation Finals. Alex couldn't find the magic from the previous day and his opponent didn't give a lot of points away as Alex fell 6-0, 6-2. Juan Bravo and Joe Hawkes started their #1 Doubles Semi-Final Consolation match by dropping serve. They broke back to get to 3-3, but were broken again and lost the set. The next set was over quickly at love.

So, the final number of points scored by the Blazers in the 2012 tournament was 8 putting LCCC at #20 out of 26 schools. In 2011 the team scored 5 points and in 2010 scored 4.5 points.

2012 NJCAA National Championship - Day 3

May 16, 2012 at Plano, TX
Wednesday at the NJCAA Men's Tennis National Tournament was a busy and successful one for the Lewis & Clark Trailblazers. Consolation draw matches were played at six different flights and the team recorded 5 wins during the day. Tyler Kerley dominated in his first #4 Singles match against Lee from Oakton. His second match vs. Delgado from Temple was a great match. Delgado and Tyler had long points each exchanging backhands and looking for opportunities to open up the court for attacking forehands. Kerley's strategy was to try to wear his opponent out by moving him back and forth and then making him move across the court on a tough shot. His opponent was more aggressive and the hope was that as the match wore on, he would start to miss. Unfortunately, he kept making them and closed out Kerley with a number of down-the-line backhands. Kerley, though, accomplished the goal of sticking to the game plan and forcing his opponent to hit winners to beat him.

Joe Hawkes and Juan Bravo had a great win at #1 Doubles vs the hard hitting Leininger brothers from Chicago (Moraine Valley). Bravo and Hawkes played percentage doubles by avoiding their opponent's formidable forehands. The Leiningers seemed to hit every shot as hard as they could including their serves which lead to a few double faults which Bravo and Hawkes took advantage of to get up a break in the first set and win. In the second set, opportunities were fewer and the teams ended up in a tiebreak where some clutch serving and shots won it easily for the Blazers. Bravo and Hawkes play in the #1 Doubles Consolation Semi-Finals on Thursday at 2pm.

Nic Lancaster played a great match at #6 singles against an Oakton player who played a smart match. But, Nic was smarter keeping the ball in play and using his big forehand and lobs to stay ahead and win in two easy sets.

Alex Prusaczyk had the most successful day for the team at #5 Singles. From the moment he stepped onto the court, Prusaczyk was feeling good - hitting his serve in with pace and great lefty kick and pounding in backhands. He made very quick work of his first opponent from Oakton, but slicing back his hard first serves, and alternating between lobbing and hitting hard forcing shots to his backhand. In his second match, Alex continued his great play, alternating between power, spin, and touch. He raced out to a quick lead and took the first set 6-1. In the second set, his opponent steadied himself a little in a few games and made Prusaczyk think a little. As the match evened up, both players struggled to serve and exchanged multiple breaks. However, at 4-all Prusaczyk played a solid service game to hold and then hit some great passing shots in the next game to clinch the match. Prusaczyk plays in the #5 Singles Consolation Finals on Thursday at 11am.

2012 NJCAA National Championship - Day 2

May 15, 2012 at Plano, TX
In the second day of the NJCAA Men's Tennis National Tournament, the Blazers #1 singles player, Juan Bravo played the #1 seed from Laredo. The match started well for Bravo, coming back in his first service game to hold and then holding again to reach 2 all. The #1 seed didn't have an overpowering serve and his backhand was not something he could attack with, so things were looking good. However, the #1 seed was used to playing excellent defense - especially when on the run to his forehand side. There were a few cases where his depth of shot surprised Bravo drawing a few timely errors. The first set went to Laredo 6-2 and his coaches and fans settled in thinking it would be a routine second round win for the top seed.

But Bravo was figuring out how to stay in points by slicing his backhand or hitting it deep to his opponent's backhand. He also noticed that he didn't like coming to the net, so he was able to move further into the backcourt during the rallies - a place where he is comfortable. The second set didn't start well, with Bravo getting broken two times in a row. At 4-1 his opponent hit a couple aces and had a confident love service game to reach 5-1. Juan kept calm and kept his pace to his own liking, taking his time in between games and points. He held serve and at 5-2, decided to try something different to break serve and stay in the match. He moved inside the baseline to receive both serves, blocking the first and taking a swing on the second. It worked! He put every return back in play and with a few timely aggressive shots, and broke his opponent to delay his celebration. Bravo stepped up his serving in the next game drawing errors with hard hit first serves and holding again to reach 5-4. Now, his opponent was under a little more pressure to close it out on his serve. Bravo applied the same return strategy and hit a few beautiful down the line backhands to pass or just overpower his opponent and break him. The crowd now began to gather and Bravo and his fans were yelling with each winner he hit. He held again to reach 6-5 and force Laredo to serve to stay in the second set. Applying the same pressure Bravo had two set points, including one on a second serve where a forehand found the net instead of the court. His opponent held on barely and they began a tiebreak. The points went back and forth with the two players exchanging mini-breaks. Eventually, Laredo had the 1-point edge and won the tiebreak 7-5.

Bravo played a near perfect mental match, attacking his opponent's weaknesses and controlling the pace of the game and his own emotions. It was the most exciting match his coach and teammates have ever witnessed, and despite it being a loss, it will surely make him an even better player.

2012 NJCAA National Championship - Day 1

May 14, 2012 at Plano, TX
The Men's Tennis Team had it's best first day at Nationals in three years yesterday recording two first round wins - the first and the last of the day. Juan Bravo had the distinction of playing the very first match of the tournament, and made the most of the opportunity defeating his #1 singles opponent from Oakton 6-1, 6-3. The courts were playing slow and the balls heavy from humidity, but Juan's serve and forehand were booming. Neil Berkel and Tyler Kerley had a fantastic #2 doubles match at the end of the day against a veteran team from Scottsdale. Their wily opponents were constantly changing tactics to disrupt service games, but Berkel and Kerley found answers to each of their opponent's strategies. They won the first set in a tiebreaker, lost the second set, and were broken in the first and third games of the third set, but they never got down and broke back in answer each time. Facing frustration from several questionable calls from the umpire, Berkel and Kerley found a way to close out the last game after four dueces and record the victory.

At #1 doubles Juan Bravo and Joe Hawkes almost pulled out a great win over a very talented team from Meridian. After losing the first set by just one break, they made an adjustment to have Juan start the second set serving on a different side. The move worked well, and they jumped out to a 4-1 lead with inspired returning and net rushing. After nearly breaking to finish the second, they held again to force a third set. In the third, things were even until their opponents got a break in the fourth game. A few shots that went the wrong way were the difference as Bravo and Hawkes went down 6-2, but the match elevated their doubles game for the consolation round.

We started in a hole, losing all three doubles matches showing our need to work on serves and returns. In singles, Juan played a near perfect match, defeating Mike Rubinelli by keeping a very strong focus. Nic and Tyler both won in third set tiebreaks to keep the final score a respectable 6-3. 2011 NJCAA National Championship - Day 3

On Wednesday at the NJCAA National Championship, Kirk Tass won a hard fought match to advance to the semi-finals of the #6 singles consolation bracket. In his quarterfinal match Kirk faced Derek Hyde from Harford CC (MD). Derek had a deceptive game - pushing soft shots from the baseline, but attacking when Kirk came to net. Tass dropped the first set, but came back to win a hard fought second set using strong baseline forehands and good net play. In the third set tiebreak, Kirk really forced the issue at net hitting several amazing volleys to close it out for a final score of 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6). Kirk then played Trey Webb from Meridian CC in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, Kirk was out of bullets and fell quickly 6-2, 6-2.

#2 Singles Consolation Joe Hawkes lost to H. McCawley from Harford CC (MD) 6-1, 6-0.

#4 Singles Consolation Cordell Powless lost to S Montgomery from Itawamba (MS) 6-2, 6-2

So, the Blazers finished with two first round wins (2 pts each) and two consolation bracket wins (1/2 pt each) for a total of 5 points beating our 2010 total of 4.5 points.

2011 NJCAA National Championship - Day 2

Kirk Tass ended day 2 of the National Tournament with the Blazers sole win. Tass started the day with his first round match against Edwards from Johnson County (KS). Kirk was hitting the ball well, but couldn't quite put everything together against this tough opponent losing 6-0, 6-2. Kirk played quite a few long points though, and had a chance to come up with a game plan. In his next match in consolation, he played Campbell from Mesa CC (AZ) and was completely dominant. Kirk was getting a very high percentage of first serves in, was using his forehand to move his opponent around, was hitting his topspin backhand effectively, and was consistently returning his opponents hard serves with ease. Kirk maintained this high level of play the entire match winning 6-1, 6-1.

#1S: (Consolation) Kyle Stickler lost to Daniel Little (Gadsen) 6-3, 6-2
Kyle started the match not missing anything and jumped out to a 3-2 lead with a break. Then, Kyle lost the next three games that all went to multiple deuces and his opponent gained too much confidence.

#3S: (Consolation) Nathan Stachowski lost to Jason Wright from Harford 6-1, 6-0.

#5S: (Main Draw) Buddy Hippen lost to J Martinez of Scottsdale 6-2, 6-1.

2011 NJCAA National Championship - Day 1

The LCCC Men's Tennis had a good first day at the NJCAA National Championship Tournament recording two first round wins and good competitive matches.

At #5 Singles, Buddy Hippen defeated Nathaniel Shook of Mesa Community College (AZ) 6-3, 7-6(4) in an 8am match. Buddy's serve was on fire which allowed him to take early control of the match. His opponent had great ground strokes but Buddy was coming to the net to keep the points short and keeping the ball in play when he had to. In the second set, Buddy came back from being down 2-1 to force a tie-breaker which he won 7-4 for the Blazers first win of the tournament.

At #3 Doubles, Buddy Hippen and Cordell Powless defeated Mike Giordano and Dale Van Witzenberg of Moraine Valley (IL) 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Moraine Valley team started strong with solid serving and returning winning the first set quickly. In the second, Buddy and Cordell made a tactical adjustment to switch returning sides. That proved to be a great decision as they started to roll on their opponents. They started making nearly all of their returns and started crossing to put away the weak volleys that their returns were forcing. It was simply great doubles execution and their best match of the season - what a great time to do it!

#1S: Kyle Stickler lost to Kyle Ogren from Mesa CC (AZ) 6-3, 6-0. Kyle took advantage of his opponent's early nerves to get to 3-3, but couldn't stop his big serve.

#2S: Joe Hawkes lost to Colt Kelley from Gadsden St. (AL) 6-1, 6-2. Joe was competing well in the games and showed off his speed, but Simon was more consistent and had a big game.

#3S: Nathan Stachowski lost to Charles Norman from Scottsdale CC (AZ) 6-2, 6-0. Nathan came out of the gate extremely strongly to win the first two games as his opponent had a very powerful serve and forehand. Nathan was returning his serve at nearly 100% and making Norman hit a winner to win his points. Slowly, though the percentages turned and Norman took over.

#4S: Cordell Powless lost to Maxim Fil from Johnson County (KS) 6-0, 6-0. We saw Maxim at the Blazer Classic and he produced more magic against Cordell including several amazing circus tweener shots against Cordell. Cordell was keeping the games competitive, but couldn't quite close one out.

#6S: Kirk Tass had a bye.

#1D: Stachowski/Stickler lost to Hardy/Regan from ABAC (GA) 6-0, 6-1. The ABAC team was returning amazingly well and didn't let Kyle or Nathan get anything going.

#2D: Hawkes/Tass lost to Litkey/McCawley from Harford CC (MD) 7-5, 6-3. Joe and Kirk were up a break in the first set but their opponents did not go away quietly as they started putting a lot of pressure on Joe and Kirk's serves. They broke back twice to win the first set and then got another break in the second set to finish Joe and Kirk off.

2011 Match #9 vs. Lindenwood-Belleville

In their last home match of the season, the Blazers pulled off a great 5-4 win over Lindenwood-Belleville. Just as in the first match with Lindenwood, LCCC won two out of three doubles setting up a singles showdown. Lindenwood's top three again proved difficult to beat. Kyle at #1 and Joe at #2 gave good efforts, but fell in two sets. At #3 Nathan came back from a contentious first set tiebreaker loss to dominate the next set 6-0, but couldn't keep the magic going in the third set tiebreaker losing 10-4. That meant that the Blazers had to win #4, #5, and #6 to win the match. Cordell Powless steamrolled his opponent at #4. Buddy Hippen won the first set easily and then won a gritty second set tiebreaker to win #5. While Buddy was finishing his match, Kirk Tass was trying to hold on in the second set after losing the first. Playing from behind the entire set, Kirk managed to break his opponent three times when he was serving for the match. Kirk was getting a lot of first serves in - many of them aces or forcing errors. In the second set tiebreaker and third set tiebreakers it got even better. He also got almost every return back in play and forced his opponent to hit a lot of balls on his serve. With everyone watching and knowing that the match was in the balance, Kirk fought off match points to get to a second set tiebreak, got ahead early and won that tiebreak, and then did the same in deciding third set tiebreak winning 10-8. It was a thrilling way to finish the last home match of the season.

2011 Match #7 vs. Kaskaskia

The LCCC Men's Tennis team swept Kaskaskia today in the last showdown before the Region 24 Championship on April 26th. Against arguably Kaskaskia's best doubles team, Buddy Hippen and Cordell Powless completed the doubles sweep with a 9-8 tiebreaker win. Joe Hawkes was ill but still played, rallying from losing the first set to winning the next 6-2 and the third set tiebreaker 10-7. All five other singles matches were exceptional performances from each Blazer. At #1 Kyle Stickler matched up well with his opponent Anthony Hallam - each possessing excellent defense paired with the ability to come to the net. As Kyle got warmed up, he began to pull away from Anthony who couldn't match Kyle's consistency or net attack. Kyle won the first set 6-4, and then put on a show in the second set hitting beautiful angled volleys and spectacular passing shots when pressed at the baseline. At #3 Nathan Stachowski smothered his opponent Taylor Powless, keeping the ball in play until he got an opportunity to come to the net or force Taylor into an error with solid forehands. At #4 Cordell Powless used a combination of offense and defense to dominate Eric Smith. Cordell used his big serve and forehand to control points on his serve. Cordell used defensive slices to nullify Eric's big serve, breaking him often. At #5 Buddy Hippen found last year's form using his powerful serve and consistent baseline game to overwhelm Kaleb Bone. Buddy found a perfect mixture of offense and defense on the baseline - handling Caleb's huge forehands and then using his own heavy topspin forehands and mixture of slice and two-handed backhands to win points. At #6 Kirk Tass only dropped one game to the same opponent who had taken him to a third set in the previous match. Kirk's forehand and backhand consistency were excellent - especially the forehand where Kirk was using topspin extremely effectively.

Seeking to do better against Missouri Baptist, the Blazers promoted the doubles team of Hawkes and Tass and singles players Nathan Stachowsk and Cordell Powless. However, Missouri Baptist brought yet one more additional player and thwarted LCCC's attempt at a better outcome winning 7-2. Kirk Tass put on quite a show at #6 singles, beating his opponent 6-0, 6-0 using his speed and big forehand. Cordell Powless did well at the #4 position, surviving a late push from his opponent to hang on and win 7-5 in the second set. At exhibition singles, Zack Funk continued his progress coming back from injury-forced absence winning 6-3, 6-4 over the same player who had played #6 for Missouri Baptist in the prior week.

His opponent upped his game at a pivotal point in the second set - leveling the match and then winning the third as well. 2010 Nationals Day 4

On Day 4, the only match we had was Ray and Zack's consolation bracket championship match. They were competing against Meridian - a team we had faced many times in the main and back draw. The match started with Ray and Zack coming close to breaking the first opponent's serve - which didn't have much on it, but a few unforced errors on our part and he held. That turned out to be the theme of the match. We made a few more unforced errors than we usually would (double faults, missed returns, volleys in the net) and the other team - while not being flashy - was hitting most of their shots including a few winners and retrievals of our good shots. So, before we knew it, we had lost the first set 6-0. We started to get into more of the games in the second set, but it was too late at that point and the second set ended at 6-1. While it was a disappointing end to that match, Ray and Zack had to remember to be proud of how they played to make the finals.

You can't win them all, but when you lose you can use it as motivation to practice more so you can win next time. For some guys, like Ray, Joe, Brian, and Kyle W., it was the last time they will compete as a Trailblazer. However, tennis is a lifetime sport. Cherish the memories of the victories you scored, take lessons from your defeats, and keep playing and giving back to the game.

2010 Nationals Day 3

Day 3 was our most exciting of the tournament. In the morning we started with #1 singles, #6 singles and all three doubles teams alive in the backdraw. First up were #1 and #3 doubles at a remote site (Plano East High School). At #3 Ray and Zack took care of business quickly against Hinds College. At #1 Kyle and Brian faced a tough team from Waubonsee made up of a very tall, talented and moody player and his good - but erratic - partner. The erratic player was too much of a weakness for that team and Kyle and Brian took the first set 7-5, but got broken at the end of the second set to force a deciding tiebreaker for the match. Kyle and Brian got up early in the tiebreak and were leading 9-5 when the erratic player was up to serve. He missed his first serve and when he served his second, the official called a foot fault - on match point for LCCC! The other player yelled a profanity and was penalized another point, so I guess we won that match 11-5 in the tiebreak :)

Back at Collin College, Joe Mofett faced an opponent from Itawamba College who was committed to hitting everything back softly no matter how ugly it looked. This proved to be too much for Joe, and despite putting some good points together, lost the match in two sets. Returning from his doubles victory, Kyle was treated to a very tough opponent from Seminole State who obviously hailed from Australia. Kyle did manage to get him talking to himself, but his groundstrokes were just too dominant to overcome and Kyle lost in two sets. Nate and Kyle then started their #2 doubles first round consolation match against Meridian. Nate was already familiar with the tall member of this team having lost to him in singles previously. The Meridian team just had too much firepower, and being fairly tall, neutralized Nate and Kyle's lobs.

In their second doubles match of the day, Ray and Zack played a team from Waubonsee. Despite being heckled by Waubonsee team members, they managed to keep their focus and again win convincingly in two sets. Across the sidewalk, Kyle and Brian were playing their second doubles match of the day against Oakton. The Oakton team had no glaring weakness, and many points lasted a long time as every player could keep a cross court rally going. The first set went to a tiebreak which we lost. The second set went to a tiebreak which we won. So, Kyle and Brian were in their second deciding tiebreaker of the day. One of the players on the other team did crack a little in the tiebreak, so we were up 9-6. Somehow, the other team got it back to 9-9 and even had a match point themselves. But, Kyle and Brian stayed strong and won the match 13-11 in that tiebreak.

In the last matches of the day (Kyle's 4th!), #1 and #3 doubles played their semi-finals. Kyle and Brian faced a ridiculously hard-hitting team from Cowley College. Hard returns off of second and even first serves convinced Kyle and Brian to pull the net man back to the baseline and to go for more on their first serves. The result was some interesting and unusual points, and in the second set, we managed to get a few games and worry the team a little, but not too much as Kyle and Brian lost in two sets. Brian did manage to entertain the crowd with three aces in one game and finished with around six total. Ray and Zack faced a plucky team from Marion Military Institute who didn't have the prettiest of games, but were in the semi-finals for a reason - consistency. This made for a tense match, where Ray and Zack knew that they just needed to hit "good enough" shots to win. Winning the first set was a relief, but we fell behind a break early in the second. Ray and Zack kept it together enough to get the break back quickly, though and when the opposing player had to serve to stay in the match, he double faulted twice including on match point. RAY AND ZACK ARE IN THE FINALS OF CONSOLATION FLIGHT THREE DOUBLES!

Day 3 Results:
Robert Martin d. Kyle Watson 6-0; 6-3
Jeremy Falls d. Joe Moffett 6-3; 6-1
Munie/Watson d. Emmanouil/Wollenberg 7-5; 3-6; 10-5
Munie/Watson d. Kindiakov/Meerovich 6-7(4); 7-6(5); 13-11
Bruce-Burgess/Valls d. Munie/Watson 6-0; 6-2
Nicotra/Purdum d. Stachowski/Stickler 6-1; 6-1
Burns/Funk d. Howard/Rhette 6-1; 6-1
Burns/Funk d. Svitak/Ta 6-1; 7-5
Burns/Funk d. Bryson/Justice 6-4; 7-5

2010 Nationals Day 2

Our second day at Nationals was our first round of matches in the back draw. No one drew any easy assignments, but we played exceptionally well. Ray Burns and Zack Funk at #3 doubles actually had a bye on day one, so they were playing their first match vs. Seward County - a team that had beaten their first round opponent 6-0, 6-0. They played extremely smart tennis, staying patient and taking advantage of opportunities. They lost the first set 6-2, and were up in the second set - making the other coach nervous, but fell 6-4 in the second. Both guys played great in all phases of the game - especially returning and at the net - good doubles. Kyle Watson recorded a win for the Trailblazers, in a very close match with Moraine Valley. His opponent had a very similar style of play, but you could tell Kyle had a little more desire and gas in the tank especially on a crucial point where he barely caught a ball before the second bounce which had to be confirmed by the referee; Kyle won 6-4, 6-4 and aftewards the official commented on what a good player and a class act Kyle is. Nate Stachowski, Brian Munie, and Kyle Stickler all had opponents from Gadsden College in their matches - no easy team to face. Nate lost the first set 6-3, but managed - as he has all season - to get into his opponent's head and get the second set to a tiebreaker. He couldn't quite convert that opportunity, but played well. Brian couldn't get started and lost 6-1, 6-0. Kyle Stickler played a very hard-hitting opponent, but found a rhythm to handling that power effectively. He got up 5-4 in the second set, but couldn't quite serve it out losing 6-1, 7-5. Joe Moffett scored a win for Lewis and Clark by showing up and waiting, and waiting, and waiting until his opponent was defaulted for being a now show (over 1.5 hours late). Thanks to Coach Thomas and Buddy Hippen for pushing for the rules to be applied. At the same site, Ray played his backdraw match and was starting to feel the affects of the heat and humidity, but soldiered through the match. He lost 6-2, 6-3 to the Itawamba player.

Day 2 Results:
Kyle Watson d. Justin Marquardt 6-4; 6-4
Daniel Little d. Brian Munie 6-1; 6-0
Colt Kelley d. Kyle Stickler 6-1; 7-5
Austin Miller d. Nathan Stachowski 6-3; 7-6(3)
Wesley Raines d. Ray Burns 6-2; 6-3
Joe Moffett d. Romeo Pahati Def (ns)

Soni/Souza d. Burns/Funk 6-2; 6-4

P.S. Nate's eye is doing well. He'll tell all his friends he got in a fight at Chuy's in Plano over the Celtics/Lakers game.

2010 Nationals Day 1

Well, we had a tough first day at Nationals with no wins. However, Kyle and Ray had close singles matches; both were playing well and were up early in the first set. Both of their opponents switched to a more consistent style of play and just starting playing better tennis. We have to have an answer for that style change in the future. The most exciting match was Kyle and Nate's doubles match where they were up a set (6-1) and a break in the second set. They nearly pulled it off in a second set tiebreaker. In the third set, they couldn't find an answer for the aggressive net play of one opponent. However, they fought off at least six match points before falling 6-4. As a team we learned to NOT get happy too early because every opponent is dangerous and that some opponents feed off of boisterous cheering against them.

Day 1 Results
Laericio Lobo d. Kyle Watson 6-0; 6-2
Luis Rovira d. Brian Munie 6-0; 6-1
David Tellez d. Kyle Stickler 7-6(4); 6-3
Jeremy Purdum d. Nathan Stachowski 6-2; 6-2
Rene Martinez d. Ray Burns 6-4; 6-2
Kyle Dew d. Joe Moffett 6-0; 6-1

Radulovic/Sanna d. Munie/Watson 6-1; 6-0
Gohman/Regus d. Stachowski/Stickler 1-6; 7-6(4); 6-4

P.S. Nate showed a ton of toughness in his doubles match. He got hit in the eye by an errant shot and continued to play and fight to win!

Nate's eye was checked out by the trainer and seemed alright. We'll monitor it today.
